Working with Fondant Day 2: Completion!
So after four more hours of toiling today, Amy and I had success!  For our first time ever working with fondant, I think we did a very good job if I do say so myself.  Since we already baked the cupcakes yesterday and colored the fondant, all we had to do today was cut out all the pieces and assemble them, as well as frost the cupcakes.  We didn’t think it would take that long.  We were...

Working with Fondant Day 1!
So we made it through day one with only one snag, which I think is pretty good for our first time working with fondant! First, we baked the cupcakes.  We decided to color the cakes light blue to keep with the winter theme.  They turned out beautifully, although they do look a little more green than blue (don’t tell anyone!).  Here’s a picture of how we put the cupcake batter into the...

Great Advice: Fondant for Absolute Beginners
So, first up: Tools. You’ll need: An X-Acto knife. A regular paring knife won’t give you a fine enough edge. A smooth, clean surface. I used a flexible cutting board. A rolling pin. Plastic wrap or bags, to keep the extra bits of fondant from drying out while not in use. A small paintbrush. A small offset spatula, or other thin-bladed spatula. A cooling rack, and a rimmed baking sheet...

Storing Fondant
Amy and I will begin our ultimate task tomorrow: using fondant for the first time!  We bought a tub of Duff Goldman’s famous white buttercream fondant, which is supposed to taste a lot better than the Wilton brand.  We found it at Michael’s, and it was on sale!  In order to give us enough time to execute all the steps to make these cupcakes properly, we are going to make this a two-day...

Tools for Working with Fondant
You can purchase special tools for working with fondant but, unless you plan to do it quite a bit, you can also just use things from around your house as your fondant tools. Grab any and all of these that you can find before you begin (well, any that sound like they’ll help you make whatever fondant creations you’re trying for): Toothpicks Bamboo skewers Chopsticks Ice pick...

Tips for Working with Fondant
Since Amy and I will be using fondant in a few days, I’ve decided to post some tips to help us (and you!) figure out what the hell we’re supposed to do with this stuff to make it look as beautiful as possible. Tip: Before applying fondant, a “sticky” surface should be applied to the cake which will help the fondant adhere to it. Many spread a thin layer of buttercream...

Inspiration for Our Next Cupcake Adventure!
For our next project, we will be working with fondant for the first time ever.  I found some Duff Goldman fondant on sale at Michael’s, which is supposed to be some of the best fondant.  Neither of us has ever tried fondant before, so we have no idea what to expect!  I bought plain white buttercream fondant so we can use our own dye to make whatever color we want! We’re going to make...

how to color fondant
Tint a small ball or enough fondant to cover a whole cake. As with any icing, tint colors at one time; matching colors later may be difficult. Add just a little of the concentrated icing color at a time, until you arrive at the exact shade you want. If you’d rather not mix color yourself, use pre-tinted fondant in a variety of pastel, primary, neon and natural shades. Any type of...
